Video: Machine Gun Preacher responds to Kony 2012

Over the course of the last week, a video called Kony 2012 has gone absolutely viral (nearly 70 million views in just five days). Joseph Kony is about as evil as it gets. For years his Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) has raided Christian villages in northern Uganda / South Sudan. Young girls are turned into sex slaves; young boys are forced to kill their parents before being turned into LRA soldiers in Kony’s evil, evil war.

In any event, the stated purpose of Kony 2012 is to “make Kony famous” in order to bring international pressure on him to the point that he is arrested and tried by the International Criminal Court (ICC). This would be a good thing indeed but it’s important to peel back a few more layers of the onion.

Enter Sam Childers, the man who has become known as the Machine Gun Preacher. A movie was made about him just last year. Gerard Butler played his role. For the last fourteen years, Childers has spent a tremendous amount of time on the ground in the region, protecting and defending South Sudan’s christians. He has built orphanages and saved countless lives. If there is anyone who knows about that region, it’s Childers.

He has released a statement in response to Kony 2012 that is definitely worth watching. In essence, he says, although Kony is very evil, the larger evil is Northern Sudan’s president Omar al-Bashir, who has been funding Kony’s genocidal war effort for years. Bashir is a Muslim who has been endorsed by the Muslim Brotherhood.

This is the video that should be going viral.

Ben Barrack has more.
