According to Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist for the New York Times, it became obvious “very soon after 9/11” that the U.S. was fighting the wrong enemy and that Pakistan’s government knew where Osama bin Laden was hiding all along. Instead of fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan, the real forces at work against U.S. interests were in Pakistan, according to Carlotta Gall.

Pervez Musharraf the face of the real enemy after 9/11?

In an interview, Gall, who spent more than ten years covering Afghanistan, said that Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf – whom the U.S. dealt with as an ally – was actually betraying America:

“I think the politicians, not all of them, but the diplomats … it took ages for them to understand that actually the persuasion wasn’t working; the engagement wasn’t bringing them on board; they were actually double dealing. And now diplomats will tell you very plainly, ‘Yes, Musharraf was double dealing.'”

There is often debate about whether political leaders are incompetent, complicit, or cowardly when it comes to doing the right things in such circumstances. According to Gall’s analysis above, incompetence seems to be attributed to the diplomats; that’s not an excuse.

Consider a diary written by William Murray of the Religious Freedom Coalition in the days after the 9/11 attacks. As Shoebat.com has reported, here is what Murray wrote about one day later, on 9/12/01:

These attacks were planned, fnanced and carried out by Saudi nationals and as a result the real culprits will never come to justice. We will bomb some third world nation like Afghanistan and our government will say our “moderate” Islamic friends with all the oil were not involved.

As for Gall’s claims that Pakistan knew where bin Laden was, she says she has an inside source for the information that former ISI chief Lieutenant General Ahmed Shuja Pasha knew of bin Laden’s whereabouts. Pakistan certainly has had its share of anti-American protesters too. Several turned out in 2010 to protest the sentencing of an Al-Qaeda suspect.

Of course, the credibility of the reporting and the source notwithstanding, some may question why the New York Times has published a rare piece of actual journalism. It’s worth noting that while the report appears to be both accurate and explosive, it does implicate the Bush administration.

While Pakistan was most certainly higher up the chain that Afghanistan when it came to culpability for the 9/11 attacks, as Shoebat.com wrote in 2012 – also published as Appendix B in The Case FOR Islamophobia – Saudi Arabia was higher up the chain than was Pakistan.
